| Note that the purpose of this section is to show you how to remove &
install a spa pump seal for a Watkins Hot Springs® "Classic"
spa. While every effort is made to be sure that virtually all areas of complexity
are covered, you may find it more difficult or sometimes easier to accomplish this task. Use
common sense. If the pump that you have on your pool or spa is a lot different from what is
depicted here, then do not use these instructions. This is page 2 of this procedure.
Safety Warnings!
| Remove Power from the spa/hot tub BEFORE performing this
procedure. Failure to comply with this requirement, can lead to
electrical shock and/or electrocution! |
Disclaimer

| With the ground wire removed, put the pump on a
suitable work surface. |
|
| Remove the screws from the impeller cover, be sure
not to lose any of them. |

 |
 |
| Remove the impeller cover. |
|
| Next, I remove the cover from the motor to gain
access to the motor shaft. |

 |
| Now, this may seem difficult at first, but in
reality, it's quite easy. Look at the picture on the left and you'll see how a flat
screwdriver is inserted in the position shown, parallel to the centrifugal switching mechanism,
(the thing with springs on it). By doing this, we stop the pump armature from turning while
we rotate the impeller counter-clockwise to remove it. Be very careful when doing this, you
don't want to distort the frame or the springs of the centrifugal actuator. |

 |
 |
| Simply unscrew and remove the
impeller... |
|
| Using a pair of channel-locks, pull off the old
pump spring seal from the pump shaft. |
|
|
 |
 |
| Using a screwdriver, I pry out the
copper heat sink, (It looks like a trumpet bell). Inside the heat sink is the ceramic part of
the pump seal. Prying this out can be a little tricky, just be careful not to bend the copper
heat sink or crack the plastic fiber of the pump backing plate. If you're having a lot of
difficulty getting it out, then remove the four bolts that attach the motor to the wet end, and
push it out from behind instead. |
